Habit Relapse: What To Do If You Fall From Your Diet or Good Habits
A few people have written me recently about falling off their good habits: a relapse after months of healthy eating, or getting derailed from good habits they’ve been forming like exercise or writing.
It’s discouraging to fall off your diet or good habits, and you an get to a point where you don’t even want to think about it.
So what to do? How do you deal with a relapse?
There’s no easy answer, to be honest. I’ve “failed” and restarted a number of habits, and I now think of relapsing as just another part of the process. We’re constantly learning about ourselves as we change our habits, which is the real point of habit change — it’s self learning, not self-improvement or self-discipline. We learn about our minds, about feelings of guilt and frustration, about coping with these feelings.
There are no easy answers, but I’m going to share some things you might try:
- Pause to reflect. One of the biggest problems is that when we don’t even want to acknowledge our relapse. We avoid thinking about it. So the first step is to take a slight pause in your day, and reflect on where you are. You were doing great, then you slipped up. It could have been for a lot of different reasons, but just know that you’re not alone, that we all slip up, and that the forces that we’re facing can often be too great for us at our weakest points. That’s OK. Reflect on this, and know that it’s not the end of the world.
- Acknowledge your feelings. It can be difficult to get off track, and we can feel like failures, feel discouraged, feel frustrated with ourselves, disappointed, sad, alone, tired, angry … sometimes multiple feelings at once. It’s OK to feel these things. We often try to avoid thinking about these feelings, but just for a minute, give yourself space to feel them, to really see them inside yourself, and accept these feelings as a part of your experience.
- Give yourself compassion. If you’re experiencing some of these difficult feelings, after acknowledging them, try giving them some love. Imagine if a friend were feeling pain — wouldn’t you comfort your friend, give them a hug, listen to them, be compassionate? We deserve to treat ourselves with that same love and compassion. Listen to your mind’s difficulties, wish for your own happiness, give yourself a virtual (or real) hug, give yourself some love. It’s OK to feel these things, and it’s OK to wish for an end to your difficulties.
- Focus on the intention. Why did you start the good habit in the first place? Was it to nurture yourself, give yourself the gift of good health, allow yourself creative expression through your writing (or painting, music, etc.), help others? These intentions are important to remember, to help yourself get back on track. You got derailed because you forgot your intention, or other priorities became more important. Now decide whether your intention for this habit is important enough to devote some time to. If so, keep your intention in mind as you get started again.
- Take the smallest step. With this good intention in mind, what is the next step you can take? Can you make it even easier? For example, instead of overhauling your entire diet, can you eat one carrot? One apple? Instead of doing a weekly workout plan, can you go for a 5-minute walk? Do 1 pushup? Taking the smallest step helps you reaffirm your commitment to yourself and your intention. Then you focus on the next tiny step.
- There is no past, only this step. All the relapses, all the failures, all the troubles … these now exist only in your head. Instead of dwelling on them, try focusing on the next tiny step. What is that like? Try to fully experience it, and see that in this moment, this small action is not difficult. In this small action, you are OK. Let go of everything else that’s happened, and be here with your intention and your current action.
- Approach the learning with curiosity. We often think “Oh, I have no discipline” or “I suck at this” or some other thought about ourselves or about the new habit we would like to form. These are preconceived ideas about ourselves or the habits … instead, try going into the next small step with an open mind, not knowing how it will be. This new habit (or old one, revisited) is not a robotic action you’re trying to create in yourself, but rather a part of a learning process, where you learn more about yourself. In this spirit of learning, approach the process with curiosity, openness, not-knowing. See what it’s like! Try to appreciate every little detail about the habit that you can notice.
I don’t pretend that this is a quick-fix solution, but these elements often have very good effects for me. I am not perfect in doing these steps by any means, just as I’m not perfect at doing my habit. But in the process of learning about myself, in the failure and restarting and finding out … the habit I’m doing in all its messiness is absolutely perfect.

My Top 9 Uses for Apple Cider Vinegar
§ Internal Detox and Digestion: ACV kicks digestion into high gear making it great for cleansing and to soothe tummy troubles. It begins by promoting saliva production in the mouth which helps digest starches. Then it stimulates the pancreas and gallbladder to produce bile and other pancreatic enzymes which digest starches and fats. This makes it great to take with meals as it eases digestion. Also, keeping these juices flowing when you’re not eating is a great way to detox the body. Just add 1-2 Tbs ACV to 8 oz water and if needed, sweetener to taste. This is great to sip on throughout the day or with each meal. For those of you who fast, adding ACV to your water is a wonderful way to really boost your body.
§ Glowing Skin: Rich in alpha-hydroxy acids, ACV is great at promoting radiant and youthful skin. It is also amazing at combating acne. Apply it directly to your skin with a cotton ball or try my DIY Acne Fighting Toner. Be aware that it does sting the skin, but only briefly. This is normal and shouldn’t be a cause for concern. The ACV helps balance pH levels, remove dirt, and balance oil levels. It is one of the most simple and effective beauty DIYs around.
§ Soothe a Sunburn: No one likes a sunburn. Especially kids. This one works great on kiddos, but adults can gain from it too. Add one cup ACV to bath water and soak. The stinging and itching will be eased almost immediately and last after the bath as well.
§ Balance Blood Sugar Levels: The high levels of acetic acid in ACV help to balance blood sugar levels after eating. This 12 week randomized control study shows us the positive effects that 1 Tbs ACV to 8 oz water has on blood sugar levels in pre-diabetics. Both the fasting blood sugar levels and the 2 hour post meal blood sugar levels were reduced significantly for those who took ACV with meals. This is one reason why I choose to add a splash of ACV in my water throughout the day. Adding ACV can be beneficial to all of us, not just those with pre-diabetes. Blood sugar control is a vital pillar to health. Without it we have a poor response to stress, lowered immunity, promotion of body wide inflammation, and in turn leave the door open for chronic disease to set in. If you’re going to be doing anything with ACV it should be this!
§ Souring Milk: When you have a recipe that calls for buttermilk, such as pancakes or muffins, grab your ACV to help you out. Simply add 1 Tbs of ACV to each cup of milk (dairy free milk also works). Stir and let this mixture sit on the counter for at least 5 minutes. You will notice the milk starts to curdle. The longer you let it sit the more sour the milk will be. After 5 minutes or more you are good to go. Just incorporate the milk as the recipe calls for.
§ Keeping Hair Shiny and Scalp Healthy: After your regular shampoo and before conditioning, rinse your hair with ACV. Mix 1 quart of water to 1/3 cup ACV. Apply it to your scalp and entire length of hair. Let it sit for a few minutes and rinse. You may notice a slight vinegar scent to your hair until it dries. The ACV not only makes your hair shiny but also does wonders to the scalp. Just as it does for the face it balances oil and pH levels on the scalp, dramatically reducing any scalp issues like dandruff, excess oil, itching, and dry scalp.
§ Keeping Dogs’ Fur Healthy and Shiny: My best friend puts ACV in her dog’s water and it has some amazing benefits. Henry has the softest, whitest fur I have ever seen. Before adding ACV in his water his snow white fur was tainted with a yellowish coarse patch of hair on the top of his back. Once starting the ACV regime that patch went away, his tear stains went away, and his overall fur became much softer. Simply add 1/2-1 tsp of ACV to each bowl of water.
§ To Prevent Razor Burn and Ingrown Hairs: The bottle of ACV I keep in my bathroom for a skin toner doubles as an after shave. It works particularly well around the bikini line and on men’s faces. I choose to use it undiluted on a cotton ball dabbed on the freshly shaved area. It stings for about a minute, but then again I have never used an effective ingrown hair product that doesn’t sting. You can also dilute it 50/50 with witch hazel for extra skin soothing effects (witch hazel like you find in the Scratch Mommy Organic Aftershave).
§ Banishing Itchy Skin From Bites, Stings, and Poison Plants: I have only gotten poison oak one time, and that was enough for me. I tried just about every natural treatment in the book to ease the itching. Aside from tea tree oil, ACV was themost effective treatment I found. Applied undiluted directly to the area helped immediately and lasted for a few hours. This also works for jellyfish stings, bug bites, or any other itchy disaster.

AS 5 REGRAS DO BASIC STYLE
3. No Flashiness.
5. Less is More.

Possui acção desintoxicante eliminando gorduras e toxinas, e melhorando o funcionamento do intestino

How To Choose The Best Workout For Your Current Mood
If you're in the process of talking yourself out of another sweat session,
stop right there.
It's likely that the problem lies not with your
general hatred of exercise, but rather the particular workout you've selected.
You wouldn't head off to a club on a Saturday night if what you really felt
like doing was settling in with a good book and a glass of wine, right? The
same logic follows for exercise. Pairing your activity with your
current mood can be one of the best ways to motivate yourself to stick to a weekly fitness routine, and you'll genuinely enjoy reaping the
benefits instead of wishing you were someplace else.
Ready to harness the power of both good and bad vibes
with your workout? Check out the best fitness matches for your current mood
below.
This high-intensity cardio class is perfectly
designed for blowing off some steam! Process the emotions of a rough day as
you punch, jab and high kick your way through the killer workout.
You’ll break a serious sweat, leave all your anger on the gym studio floor,
and walk away with a big boost of endorphins to boot. Just remember: It’s okay
to channel that inner fire into your workout effort, but be sure to listen to
your body when it says “stop.” It’s surprisingly easy and common to injure yourself when you push too hard in workouts fueled
by strong, negative emotions.
One of the best times to try and train the mind
is when it’s preoccupied with stress, anxiety and
worry. Use your
workout to soothe your body mentally, physically and emotionally before calling
it a day, and take to that yoga mat. This mindful exercise helps the body let go of stress and calm down for a quality night’s rest. Try these posesto work wonders on your stress levels as you
focus on breathing deeply and evenly, realigning with your personal center.
Harness that positive energy and take to your
favorite jogging route! You just might find that your optimistic attitude adds a little pep to your step, making
jogging feel even more enjoyable -- or at least tolerable, for those who aren’t into pounding the
pavement. Running has been shown to boost brain performance, protect your
heart, and pretty much guarantee a good night’s sleep. Combining that happy mood with an adrenaline
rush and feel-good endorphins sets you up for a really great day.
Channel your inner adventurer, grab that
backpack and hit a new trail for a workout that challenges both your body and
curious mind. Hiking takes your body back to its roots by working the smaller stabilizer
muscles that
are left out of more common, less dynamic workouts. And just getting the chance
to reunite with nature can boast big benefits. Hikers tend to
be more creative, happier and more mindful. So be one
with the Earth and go explore!
Immerse yourself in a pool of calming blue water
and let your mood float away as you move through your favorite stroke. Swimming
allows you the opportunity to work out in your own space, both mentally and
physically, as you move at your own pace and feel your own rhythm. Swimming is
a fantastic form of low-impact cardio exercise, getting your heart rate up while being kind to
your joints. The rushing water feelsrefreshing and soothing at the same time, and some even find that
a good session in the pool can alleviate symptoms of depression.
Hop on that saddle and ride wherever your body
feels like taking you! Bounding energy isn’t required to reap the benefits of
aerobic activity, sightseeing and fresh air that come along with these two
wheels. Plus, cyclists also tend to be fit and self-sufficient, and enjoy
longer lives than their non-pedaling counterparts. So go climb hills, coast along
a waterway, or pedal through town just for the fun of it.
Use that extra motivation to challenge yourself
with a boot camp class incorporating intervals, group work and maybe even a few
new tools -- that’s right, grab those kettlebells! Classes that utilize high-intensity interval training
(HIIT) and circuits not only help improve cardiovascular
fitness, but also build muscle strength and create ametabolic afterburn effect that can be noticed long after you've hit
the showers. And oftentimes, people keep coming back for that sense of camaraderie they feel with their classmates as they
all push through that last set of burpees together. It’s the perfect place to
share your positive energy!
No matter how you're feeling, there is always a way to make that sense of
self-awareness work for you rather
than against you. The next time the thought of your exercise routine makes you
want to cower underneath your sheets instead of throwing on your favorite fitness
outfit and moving, consider your mood and then match it to the right workout
for you at that current moment. It's worth a
try, right?

D.R
3. Ao longo do dia, aposte em alimentos ricos em fibras e em água, como frutas ou vegetais. A fibra impede que o açúcar seja absorvido de forma rápida e faz com que uma pessoa se sinta saciada durante mais tempo. Já a água dilui as calorias do alimento: quanto mais água um alimento tiver, menor é a quantidade de calorias. É matemática pura;
4. A fome consegue ser emocional e, na maior parte das vezes, está associada ao stress do dia-a-dia, o que faz com que entremos mais rapidamente em hipoglicemia. Como não é possível quebrar a rotina casa-trabalho-casa — a não ser que se queira inspirar no filme Into the Wild —, Lillian Barros aconselha uma alimentação rica em antioxidantes (com radicais livres na sua composição). Em causa estão alimentos anti-stress, ricos em aminoácidos, boas ferramentas para combater a ansiedade. São exemplos a banana, o ovo, o iogurte, a aveia e o chocolate preto;
5. Se comer na rua for mesmo inevitável, opte por saladas, sopas ou hambúrgueres grelhados (sem quaisquer batatas fritas, pão ou refrigerantes a acompanhar) — uma escolha fácil se for a um shopping. Caso se desloque a um restaurante, o ideal é optar por um prato em que a carne ou o peixe seja o ingrediente principal. Nada de pratos combinados;
7. Muitas vezes não é fome que sente, mas sim desidratação. Chás, infusões e tisanas podem dar uma sensação de conforto e permitem que fiquemos entretidos ao longo do dia. Mariana Abecasis acrescenta outra solução: ir bebendo algo com sabor e sem açúcar, como chá ou limonada, “para acalmar o vício de ir pondo coisas à boca”;
8. Lave os dentes a seguir à refeição ou coma uma pastilha elástica com sabor a mentol, lembra Abecasis, para deixar a boca fresca e limpar o palato e evitar a sensação de fome;
9. Chegou ao final do dia, está com fome mas ainda é cedo para jantar? Coma um prato de sopa ou um ovo cozido. É tudo uma questão de psicologia: a nossa cabeça associa este tipo de comida a uma refeição principal. O inverso acontece quando, à hora do almoço, comemos uma merenda em vez de ingerirmos uma refeição completa: durante o dia vamos comer mais para compensarmos o facto de, supostamente, não termos almoçado;
